Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Underweight and sick babies requiring the highest level of care spend time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The 11-bed specially-equipped unit, which has operated since 1976, is staffed by neonatologists, nurse practitioners and nurses skilled in neonatal intensive care.

All parents of NICU babies are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before the infant is discharged from FGH. In addition, babies are monitored for two years following graduation from NICU through the Follow-up Clinic as they meet physical and developmental milestones.

The Forrest General NICU is also the center of the Neonatal Transport Program, a system designed to bring sick newborns quickly and safely from hospitals not equipped to handle babies with critical needs.
